Creating you site survey (airspace) To begin the process of obtaining the approval from air traffic authority, you can submit your request online directly on the NavCanada website. Note that you don't need to type in all your procedures granted that you have them in place prior to operations. You can also contact NavCanada through the nearest flight information center (FIC) the Vancouver Region can be contacted by email at uav_vr@navcanada.ca While the phone numbers for the other FIC's in Canada area: Kamloops 1-866-541-4101 Edmonton 1-866-541-4102 Winnipeg 1-866-541-4103 London 1-866-541-4104 Quebec (bilingual service) 1-866-541-4105 Halifax 1-866-541-4106 Whitehorse 1-866-541-4107 North Bay 1-866-541-4109 Alternatively you can contact the tower at an airport directly by using the Canadian Flight Supplement to help find the airport contact info. Once you have identified the airspace and obtained permission (if necessary) you'll need to identify the aerodromes or heliports that are close to your flying location and determine your distance from them. To determine the distance Google Maps has a measurement tool that is helpful or you can use the measurement tool directly in the Fore Flight Mobile app Remember that the Canadian aviation regulation refer to distance in nautical miles: 1 nautical mile = 1.1508 miles = 1.852 km Airspace Diagram To get a better idea of how airspace and control zones work familiarizes yourself visually with diagrams like this one where you can clearly see that airspace works almost like an upside down cone. The control tower being the center and it expanding as it gets higher.
