Proper Visual Scanning Techniques Because our eyes have a blind spot it is important to use proper visual scanning to counter that effect. The best scanning approach is to segment your scan into blocks and then scan from one block to the next, focus on that block for a few seconds then move to the next block. This will allow you to detect motion in each block: Don't stay focused on one area too long Don't just do a quick "once over" scan Human Error Human error is very often a major cause of many preventable accidents. Understanding what causes these errors and how they happen will help you improve flight safety and very often it comes down to making good decisions. It is very important firstly to understand that as a human you do have those limitations and that there will be factors that affect your performance. Attitude Attitude is a personal motivational disposition to respond to persons, situations or events in a given manner, but It can be changed with training and personal. development . Hazardous Attitude Can and do block good decision making and learning to recognize these attitudes in ourselves is important. There are five hazardous attitudes: Resignation Anti-Authority lmpulsivity nvulnerability Macho It is important to understand which one of these attitudes you are most likely to have and know how to avoid it influencing your decisions. Checklist In order to reduce the chance of human error, aviation makes extensive use of procedures and checklists. These help ensure that you don't miss or forget something important. Always ensure you have a checklists and systematically go through them item by item without skipping anything . The items should be numbered if you need to go back to an earlier item in a checklist, you must continue through all the next items from that point onwards even if you have already done it. Where possible, use two people to step through a checklist to confirm nothing is missed just like in an aircraft.
