Radio Communication Radio Communication rules and frequencies for the airport can be found in the COMM section of the CFS. Both Controlled and Uncontrolled aerodromes use EXTENSIVE radio communication to allow all aircraft to avoid each other, radio calls can be: Between aircraft and ATC (controlled aerodromes) Between aircraft (uncontrolled aerodromes) Learn the rules about Radio Communication near an aerodrome in the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) It is recommended that you carry a two way aviation radio with you when operating near an aerodrome. Contact the ATC for the aerodrome a few days in advance of the operation to determine how to communicate with them during the operation. There are many different types of Radio Communication rules and frequencies at Aerodromes (see CFS) some of the key ones are: ATIS -Automatic Terminal Information Service MF - Mandatory Frequency ATF -Aerodrome Traffic Frequency 123.2 - Frequency to use when none is published ATIS - Automatic Terminal Information Service Broadcast one way information on a repeating broadcast, no need to respond, you should monitor ATIS before beginning a RPAS operation (if available) Broadcast contains important information about the current conditions at the aerodrome and usually updates every hour, the information provided is usually: Weather Active Runways Communication Frequencies MF - Mandatory Frequencies Set up at busy uncontrolled aerodromes or aerodromes with Class E control zones As the name suggests it is MANDATORY that all aircraft within the MF Area communicate on this frequency Pilots operating in the MF Area must be equipped with a functioning radio capable of 2-way communication There are very specific reporting procedures that pilots must follow in an MF area
